after a long ordeal of my extreme illness and long drives to Texas and Kansas, the rats are done. Now we have to get new carpet in the whole house by my doctor's orders. That, and deal with the drama that some of the rat people are generating. I know they're full of shit, but it still hurts and stresses me out.

Here's hoping the carpet and drama fallout will be done soon. No more rats, no more shelter.
This journal will be gone soon, I just thought I should put a message up before disappearing altogether.

Hi there, everyone. I've posted my available rats several other places before, but can't get anyone to adopt. It's just my husband and I running Little bRats Rat Refuge, and I'm disabled and he works 12 hour shifts. As far as I can tell, we're the only shelter in the state.
That said, we're past capacity and can't accept any new ratties until we get some of these guys in forever homes. We try our best to take care of them and give them a good life, but with so many rats (18 for adoption, 7 personal) we can't keep the cages as clean as I would like and we can't give them as much individual handling time as they need. We've tried very hard to adopt them out, but so far we've only adopted two rats out in a year and a half.
    rat transport help?? )
I'm so sorry for the cross-posting, but I don't know what else I can do

If you would be willing to take in some foster ratties or even adopt them for your very own, please contact me. We may be able to set something up with rat transport or something. I can't drive extremely far, but could drive to the borders of New Mexico or a bit beyond.
Please, I really need some help. People in this state just don't seem to think of rats as pets. I love each and every one of our little critters, but it's not fair to them or me for things to be so overcrowded. I will continue running the shelter, I just need to have fewer charges, we're in way over our heads, and I'm getting terribly discouraged.

Thanks, and if you can help me out I will love you forever and ever.

Hi there, I just made a LJ account for my rat shelter and joined a few rattie communities, so I figured I should introduce myself.
I'm Meg and my husband and I run Little bRats Rat Refuge, a shelter for abandoned and abused rats in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I've been a rat lover all my life, and an owner since I was about 18 (I'm 27 now). I try hard to make non-rat people realize that their superstitions and social prejudices about rats are wrong, and teach them real facts, but we know how that usually goes...

We currently have about 15 babies who are in need of adoption, and I'm having a horrible time finding anyone to take them. We're filled past capacity, and until we adopt some of these kiddies out, there isn't room for anyone else!
If you're looking to give a couple sweeties a loving forever home, please message me. Even if you're far away, maybe we can figure something out. Feel free to message me with questions and networking too.
Once I get off my butt and finish a website, I'll be sure to post it.
    Nice to meet you, everyone.

Some good links for rat info
http://www.rmca.org/ - tons of great stuff for owners and rodent-curious.
http://www.rmca.org/Vets/index.php?action=list is where they hae so kindly listed vets all across the country who are rat-friendly. It's amazingly difficult to find a vet who deals with rats, especially where I live. If you need a vet in New Mexico, I can send you to my terriffic vet, Dr. LaVallee. (Not sure why my vet isn't listed there yet, I've communicatd with the site owner about the vets in the area- who was clueless and that my guy is the only one who knows anything, but he's not listed yet...)

great place to ask questions and just sit back, read, and learn. Tons of data files to read up on, great information from people all across the world who are vets, vet techs, rat rescuers, and shelters.

http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html the perfect diet for rats, constructed by a vet and a rat expert. It's easy to do, and mixes together to last a long time and make for some very healthy and happy rats. All those years of feeding my pet rats store-bought seed mixes, I never knew that those aren't even good for them and don't contain what they need. Arg!
Pet stores also still sell cedar and pine as bedding, even thoug it's now known that cedar is a carcinogen and rats have allergies to pine that can make it very hard for them to breathe! If only I knew back then. It makes me seriously wonder why pet stores persist in selling that junk.

I'll get more for you soon, I just wanted to share some good initial info, and actually post on here. I'm on Myspace as ratrefuge too, though I think I will have a lot of the same entries.
Once I figure out what I'm doing, I'll have an example of my flyer up for distributon, as well as t-shirts wit our mascott and logo.
